A dude ranch — also called a guest ranch — is a working or recreational ranch that welcomes paying guests. Most are located in the American West, particularly in Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Arizona, and Idaho. Stays are typically weekly, running Saturday to Saturday, and are usually all-inclusive.

What’s usually included in the weekly rate:

• Lodging in private cabins or ranch-style rooms
• All meals — typically hearty, family-style dining
• Daily horseback riding with instruction
• Other activities such as hiking, fishing, archery, and cookouts
• Children’s programs at family-oriented ranches

Dude ranch vacations are not budget trips — expect to pay $2,500–$5,000+ per person per week at a quality ranch. But because nearly everything is included, there are very few extra costs once you arrive.

Not all ranches are the same. Some cater primarily to families with young children. Others focus on serious riders looking for cattle drives and backcountry adventures. Still others are geared toward couples or adult groups seeking a relaxing retreat with riding as one of several activities.

Questions to ask when comparing ranches:

• What is the minimum age for children? Many ranches require children to be at least 6 or 7 to participate in riding programs.
• What riding levels do you accommodate? Beginners and advanced riders have very different needs. Make sure the ranch has horses and trails suited to your level.
• How many guests are on the ranch at once? Smaller ranches (20–40 guests) feel more personal and intimate than larger operations.
• What non-riding activities are available? Important for group members who may not want to ride every day.
• What is the cancellation policy? Ranch stays are significant investments — make sure you understand what happens if plans change.
