How to Plan a Camping Trip with Your Children
Getting outside together — from first tent to happy campers.

Camping with children is one of the most rewarding family adventures you can take — and one that doesn’t require a big budget or exotic destination. A night or two under the stars, away from screens and schedules, has a remarkable way of bringing families closer together. The secret is preparation. Here’s how to plan a trip that everyone will want to repeat.

1
Start Simple — Choose the Right First Campsite

The biggest mistake first-time camping families make is choosing a destination that’s too remote or too challenging for young children. A difficult first experience can put kids off camping for years. Start simple, succeed, and build from there.

What makes a good first campsite for families:

  • Drive-up or car camping sites — You can bring more gear, more comfort items, and don’t have to carry everything on your back. Perfect for families with young children.
  • Clean restrooms nearby — Non-negotiable for most families with young children. Look for campgrounds with flush toilets, at minimum.
  • Close to home — Your first trip should be within an hour or two of home. If something goes wrong — gear forgotten, weather turns, child has a hard night — you can easily head home without it feeling like a defeat.
  • Activities nearby — A lake for swimming, a short easy trail, or a playground within the campground keeps children happy and reduces the pressure on you to entertain them constantly.

State park campgrounds are often ideal for first-time family campers — they’re typically well-maintained, have good facilities, offer ranger programs, and are more affordable than private campgrounds.

💡 Try a Backyard Test Run First
If your children have never slept in a tent, set one up in your backyard first. Let them sleep in it one night before the real trip. You’ll discover who’s comfortable with it, work out any gear issues, and arrive at the campground with more confidence all around.

Pack Smart and Involve the Kids

Packing for a family camping trip is an art. You want to be comfortable and prepared without bringing so much gear that setup becomes a two-hour ordeal. Focus on the essentials, add a few comfort items, and let each child pack their own small bag of personal things.

Family camping essentials:

  • Shelter — A tent sized for your group plus one person (a 4-person tent for a family of three gives comfortable room). Practice setting it up at home first.
  • Sleeping bags rated for the temperature — Nights are almost always colder than you expect, especially at elevation. Check nighttime lows for your destination.
  • Sleeping pads — Insulate from the cold ground and dramatically improve sleep quality. Often overlooked by first-timers.
  • Headlamps for everyone — Children especially love having their own. Essential for nighttime bathroom trips.
  • First aid kit — Include blister treatment, insect sting relief, children’s pain reliever, and any prescription medications.
  • Bug spray and sunscreen — Apply before outdoor activity, not after the bugs find you.
  • Easy camp meals — Plan simple meals. Foil packet dinners, hot dogs over the fire, and instant oatmeal for breakfast are classics for good reason.
💡 Give Kids a Job
Children who have a role in camp setup — collecting firewood, blowing up sleeping pads, setting the picnic table — feel ownership over the experience and are more invested in the trip. Even a 4-year-old can carry their own small backpack and feel proud of contributing.
